I've fallen a few times in different helmets. I think the boeotian may deform on impact. It would certainly cut the scalp when I hit the ground, and I suspect it would dig in to the back of my neck. But there isn't far to fall from a small horse. My biggest fear is a broken leg, and what the medic would try to do to my boots to get them off.
I'm riding with either two long javelins, or a spear and a javelin. The two javelins are easier since they are lighter and lack a butt spike.
I haven't tried anything two handed without a saddle, like a xyston. I often ride as a Roman with a kontos and don't forsee any great difference. Riders find that holding the reins gives them a sense of security. It is a bad habit, but they balance themselves by pulling back on the reins. But riding with a kontos is simple enough if you trust the horse and just let it go. Generally I can use the crowd rope and kontos either side of the horse to guide him.
