Disciplina
#1
I'm intriqued by Disciplina the goddess - did the word and concept of discipline exist in latin before her? Or did it originate with her?

Also is it likely she was an invention of Hadrian, or just an existing goddess he extolled?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Interesting question. I'm not aware of dedications to Disciplina/Discipulina prior to the reign of Hadrian. And there was an understandable surge with Septimius Severus. (Also of interest: I seem to remember that dedications come predominantly from Britain and Africa, provinces that may have had particular discipline problems?)

Just noticed your other question: yes, the word existed (e.g. Pliny, Epist. 10.29), but not (as far as I can see) the cult. (Compare Hist. Aug., Vita Hadr. 10 with Vita Aug. 24, for emperors keen on exacting discipline!)

You can also see the word existed long time before because the Romans called the etruscan rituals "disciplina etrusca", so this has to be an old republican word. But for sure the cult is installed much later.
