I know little of the steel/iron used to make roman gladius and pugio. How were the blade edges hardened? Were they like modern blades of today, steel, quenching then tempering, or was that knowledge unknown and edges just hammer hardened?
I want to know this because I have made a pugio and am tossing up the idea of hardening it the conventional way, or just hammer hardenening the edges as was common with a lot of Gallic blades.
