Legio XXX, cohort III setup camp at the Muster on the St. Mary's timeline event in
Fort Wayne, IN on the weekend of May 20. Though we received some rain on Saturday morning, the rain cleared out by the afternoon and Sunday went particularly well.

Our roman camp has now two conturbaria tents:

The tent on the left still needs to be painted.

The panis is just like what was found in Pompeii, but without the extra carbonization.

C'mon, man, I thought you were going for authenticity! First heat the oven to 1900 degrees F, bake for three hours, and you get plenty of carbon. You might inject a little carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide, if you really want the spicy flavor...

Nice looking display, and a good camp. Weather looks fine, too. Good job!

You forgot "and wait for 1800 years before taking out of the oven".

How many people came through your area and asked questions about Roman things? Do you offer samples of the breads?

On Saturaday attendance was a bit off, but improved dramatically on Sunday as the weather was so much better. The food display, including the bread, is look only due to state ordinances. We would need a license to actually serve food to the public.

By the way , the bread is made from spelt flour and is seasoned with honey, no sugar.

We sometimes make spelt bread. We also use buckwheat flour and throw in a handful of groats, to sort of simulate rough-ground flour. It's mighty tasty. So far, we've had no trouble giving away samples at private events, like museum displays, etc. Out in the more public, I'm not sure how that would go. Probably the legislators have pre-decided that we're some kind of health risk, so we would be disallowed.

We are considering a workaround for that, if ever we get a kitchen built. That workaround seems to be like this. We can serve food to our own group members without restriction. Our plan is to have people become short term members, pay prorated dues, and be given a membership certificate, probably good for the duration of the camp/event. We'll have that concept looked at by the people who understand laws better, and let you know if that works. Naturally, as members, they'd have to wear loaner tunics, probably participate in other things, it couldn't be just to "sell lunch".

More details to follow.
