Ring Pommel Gladius?
#1
I've read a few suggestions about ring pommel gladii being introduced in the mid to late 2nd Century? Does anybody have any images, information or know of anybody who produces a a reconstruction? Also has any evidence been unearthed showing how these might have been worn/slung?

Thanks in advance.

Most Gladivs Ring Pommels are worn like and gladivs of the period with a scabbard slide and in the early 2nd AD the pompeii style locket may also have been used but by 3rd AD scabbard slides were the norm. With either box chapes or wheel chapes as in the first pic from Britian 3rdAD. I think I have some stella pics I will see if I can find Big Grin

Thanks Tony. I'd be delighted if you could find me anymore info. What did you mean by 'locket' with regards to the Pompeii gladius?

Try to get a copy of Christian Miks book.
Studien zur Romischen Schwertbewaffnung in der Kaiserzeit.
Has a lot of info and pictures, but in German only.

Yes, that is the understanding now.

AFAIK, there are no finds providing a definite answer. Balteus with slide probably was the common way but must not have been exclusively so.

I've got a blade and am getting the pommel made by a friend. I will do the pommel decoration, hilt, scabbard and so on myself, so hope to get one done in the course of this year

Here is the literature I used on my research so far, if that helps:
