Dear members,

As of tomorrow, we will start on the earlier announced project: making a child seized lorica segmentata for my son.

I will post details here, including pics.

The goal is to make a Corbridge type A lorica from steel and brass.

Step 1: roam the internet to get a decent drawing plan for the lorica. I used this link to get it.

Step 2: scale it down to my childs seizes. I opted for 80% of the original. This means the body segmentata are 4.5 cm wide, and will be 45 cms for the left side, and 49 cms for the right side. The shoulder and back plates are scaled down the same way.


Step 3: make a card board version
It learned me I need an extra 0.5 cm for the lowest segmentata for the rim, plus an extra 0.5 cms for the rimming of the shoulder/neck plates.
I made the card board version fitting whilst my son wore a thick winter coat, and taped it together.



Step 5 getting the hardware. I opted for 1 mm steel, and 0.5 mm brass for the loops. The shoulder hinges will be made of 0.8 mm brass.
In his seize, this means roughly 6 kgs in steel and brass.

I had a wholesale shop cut the metal into the desired strips of 1 metre each. Total costs of the metal and cutting was 80 euros.

We cut the strips into the desired plates for the segmentata, and shoulder guards.





Step 6: the rivets. I opted for 3 mm by 16 mm copper rivets. They are hard to get and not cheap: about 20 euros for 100 pieces.
