Rim & iron binding of Roman shields
#1
Few questions about shield rims (Republic and Early Empire):

1) Are there any archeological evidence for rim similar to Polybios description (6.23) - small rim covering only extreme upper and lower edge? (echei de peri tên itun ek tôn anôthen kai katôthen merôn sidêroun sialôma)

2) Evidence for shield rim in later Republic (Peter Connolly and Graham Sumner made some plates on which shield edges of Caesar's troops - and Caesar's own shield Big Grin - are wholy cowered with iron/bronze rim) What was first - "complete rim" or "cut down" scutum?

3) figure 83in M.C. Bishop, J.C.N. Coulston: "Roman Military Equipment..." (2nd edition) - the rim of the shield from Iza: is it complete or broken in two parts? Are the rim examples mostly broken? Mr Bishop maybe :?: ?

Thanks for any help
