Do you mean Bothwellhaugh?

Its not really my period but I think the fort was in use while the Antonine wall was still garrisoned.

Yip thats the one. Why where they there when they had built the Antoine wall? also the build the fort about 600 meteres(or so) from the river clyde, why not nake it on the river boundary? it seems like a more suitable place to me, more natural.

Has the river moved over time?

No sarcasm fhaggis. Rivers silt up over time and can change their course.

The garrison of Britain was too big to fit along the Antonine Wall, Francis! Some of them had to be accommodated on the roads running up to the frontier (and beyond). The garrison at Bothwellhaugh were well-placed to police the Lanarkshire countryside.

If I remember correctly, the fort sits on high ground, where the surroundings can be kept under observation. The bathhouse is located downhill, near the river to satisfy the requirement for water.

You may be interested to know that the Bothwellhaugh bathhouse features as one of the colour reconstructions in the forthcoming Roman Auxiliary Forts book.
