Nydam Bog Roman Swords
#1
Ave everyone,
I am interested in researching the late Roman and Germanic swords found in Nydam Bog in Denmark. Does anyone have photos of these swords and any information on them? I have seen the Nydam Bog web site, and it shows one or two of the swords, but I thought some of you might have more extensive information and pictures that I havn't found yet that could help me in my research. Any help you could provide would be very much appreciated!
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, draconarius, Secunda Brittanica

I took a number of pictures, including swords and javelins, when I visited Schlesvig museum in 2002. Their quality is not too high but maybe you still like them.
Try the ancient weapons section. Someone there has a photo link to a shed load of pikkys which include the bog finds.

Ask about and no doubt they will point you to it.
Ewart Oakshott's book: 'The Archaeology of Weapons'
is good from the Bronze age to the present, and has
a whole chapter on 'bog finds', including his own
line-drawings of some of the swords. I'm not sure if
you can still get it through Amazon.com, though.
Thanks for the leads, guys. I have modelled my own spatha after a style from Nydam Bog. It is definitely later Roman, and displays many Germanic characteristics. It is similar to the late period spatha sold by Albion, but I carved my grip in a different pattern than theirs, and made it of antler rather than bone.
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, draconarius, Secunda Brittanica
