Preventing Rust on Iron
#1
An ongoing topic...

What was done to prevent rust.

I've been experimenting with pitch, rosin, gum arabic, neats foot oil, animal glues, beeswax, turpentine, oils, lard, tallow etc ....and today found this:

Pliny Natural History 34.150
regarding rust prevention...
..mentions lead acetate, gypsum and pitch / rosin

and this...

"Farm And Garden Rule-Book" book, by L. H. Bailey. 1911
To Prevent Metals From Rusting.
12. Melt together 3 parts of lard and 1 part of powdered resin. A very thin coating applied with a brush will keep stoves and grates from rusting during summer, even in damp situations. A little black lead can be mixed with the lard. Does well on nearly all metals.

To Prevent Rusting Of Nails, Hinges, Etc.
13. One pint of linseed oil, 2 ounces black lead ; mix together. Heat nails red-hot and dip them in.

Note: .. black lead is usually graphite...

Might not stick well to moving parts such as segmentata plates... and the 1911 reference only to indicate that folk have been using similar techniques/materials for many 100's of years...

...food for thought!

Not really...one is a modern reference, and the other completely non-military. More like..."wasted food". 8)
