As a novis Roman sutor I needed some shoes to show this summer.
As a medieval shoemaker I noticed that the public was drawn to these
little shoe models, it was cheap to make and easy to pack.
So I started to make some midget Roman shoes.
This "Valkenburg" caliga is the thirth one I made.
It's 17 cm long and next time I rather make it in a size 42

Very nice! Small sizes may be in demand for reenactors children and grandchilden. Adrian Wink has the correctly made Roman hobnails
if you need them. (See his section in the RATmarketplace)

That's actually a really good idea...shoes for kids...Some legionary parents I'm sure would be interested!

I know there is a big demand for children shoes, I made several medieval ones.
Two years ago I made these for an "Iron age" couple as a Birth present, its a size 18 (2.5 U.S.)

I also like your idea of making little models. That's a very nice way to show many types more easily. Well done!

Thanks for the tip, but I discovered Adrian Wink's site before I knew about RAT
Still have a bunch of old hobnails, I'll use them for these models.
Have to practice nail-setting some more and draw a pattern first
This looks real untidy

Nice work, Filip :-) )
And never worry about the nailing there, some of the originals are just as "untidy" ...

Thanks for the compliments
The next midget (15 cm) is a solea from "Römische lederfunde aus Mainz".
I realy liked to make this model, It's a three layer sole, total of nine mm.
The ankel strap can ease be removed/replaced by extracting just two hobnails.
I made the lacing holes with a awl.
Just have to find something "authentic" to replace the 2-prong lacing needle

Thanks Martin...
For this single piece solea I took a sole pattern from Commancchio
I couldn't see the binding... so I made one up
It would be cheap starter-footwear for civilians
the only tool you need is a sharp knife and something
to open-up the slits(I use a piece of antler).
I made the sole from 4mm/10oz and the straps from 2mm/5oz leather.
