Midget Roman shoes
#16
They don't mention 1B century AD but they have some solea from early first century AD.
#65 upper is made from one piece of leather, extra sole was tunnel stiched on.

The Roman 'Flip-flop', but with their usual ingenuity, they have secured it around the ankle! 8)

Yes Gaius, I was thinking how they would secure #65
Did they fix the two "front-straps" like the other models, between the toes :?:
And then just wrap the two "back-straps" around the ankle and tie a knot :?:
I couldn't see slits between the toes on the Commancchio and I can't see them on this one.

I'm not an expert on shoes in anyway, but it looks like the tong goes between the toes.
Which slits between the toes do you mean?

Well you have to fix the tong to the sole between the toes don't you?

Doh....
Yes, I see what you are meaning there.
I guess that loop thing on theother sole serves a similar function, but I see where you are coming from now, as I am not sure what type of fastening that is part of...as I said, flip-flops are my extent...

I posted a pic on the previous page of the Mainz solea #65 but could not see how the tong was connected between the toes.

Found some time to make a new model.
This one is 19cm long.
I took this from the van Driel-Murray drawing in stepping through time, don't know where this was found.
there is a similar calcei found at Bar Hill, dated 2 A.D.
The sole is glued on with gummi arabicvm for the moment.
I will put the hobnails in at my first Roman event next weekend at Velzeke.

And here is a solae from Vindolanda 2a AD.
Couldn't find the Driel-Murray research report so I had to work with two
not so detailed pictures.
