Your Favorite Roman?
#1
This topic is meaningless, I know, but it's still fun

Whose carreer do you follow the most? Africanus? Julius Caesar? Sulla?

My favorite Roman is actually Gauis Marius. Although his carreer is a little tarnished from the events following his 7th consulship, I can't help but think that many Generals' armys after him succeeded partially from Marius's contributions to the Roman army. And great generals followed Marius. His carreer is one that I admire. An "Italian hayseed with no greek" climbed the ladder to success amoungst various obstacles, including the unsupportive patrician class whose contempt often mired him.
It's gotta be Vespasian for me. A man from reasonably humble background who gained his position on his merits. He put the empire back on track after Nero, and made the empire into what we remember it for.

If only some of his successors had followed where he led.
Wow, could you narrow it down a bit ?

Any Roman, huh ? Emperor or otherwise ? Any period ?

I can break down my favorites by century.

1st century BC : Pompeius Magnus

1st century AD : Corbulo

2nd century AD : Marcus Aurelius

3rd century AD : Aurelian

4th century AD : Constantine the Great

5th century AD : Aetius

6th century AD : Belisarius

Well there are my top seven - all great generals with the exception of Marcus Aurelius who had no contact with the legions before his accension/coranation, otherwise a great man.

Even though I find Gaius Julius Caesar very interesting as well as Pompeius and Marius, I would give my favorite Roman, to the first roman emperor, officially at least, Gaius Octavius Octavianus Augustus Caesar. His political reforms are just fascinating and his whole spectacular career and life are among the most successful in the history of the world.
THERE ARE NO STUPID PEOPLE, ONLY PEOPLE STUPID ENOUGH TO NOT KNOW WHEN THEY'VE MADE A MISTAKE

Probably Julius Caesar. I like his personality, and he was a great tactician.

emperors: Vespasian, Marcus Aurelius, Julian (in chronologic order), also because they seemed to be good men.
Generals: Suetonius Paullinus, who won his battle against all odds.
I'd have to say my favorite Roman is Marcus Licinius Crassus. Maligned and misunderstood, he was in fact a remarkably astute and proficient kingpin in the vicious arena of late Republican power politics.
My favorite Roman of all is a little known soldier on whom much speculation has been placed: Lucius Artorius Castus.
Lucius Aurelius Metellus, miles gregarius, Secunda Brittanica
