A good start would be reading through the threads on this section, Antonius, as there are many different impressions listed here. Welcome aboard.

Hi, welcome on RAT. I hope you´ll have a nice time hear and would learn a lot. Note that you´ve to put your (first) name in your signature, as per the forum rules.

I see you already decided which timeframe you want to present, that´s a rather good start. Do you also know which region you want to portray.

Also a good start for Roman military re-enactment is the wonderfull legionairies handbook written by Matt Amt of the 20th legion. (you can find it on [url:14tdco08]http://www.larp.com/legioxx[/url]). Start with tunics, shoes and a period correct belt. (which you can acquire by different craftsman. Therefore look at the suppliers list on Matt's handbook.) Another good start for reading is the wonderfull book of Bishop and Coulston, called ' Roman military equipment, 2nd edition. (short: B&C2). This also give you a good first insight in the different findings from your period of interest.

Hope this will help to start getting a nice kit together.

Thanks for the plug, Jurjen! Quintis, just be aware that my Legio XX site is geared towards the mid-first century, and almost everything has changed by 160. Helmets, armor, belts, swords, shoes, possibly even tunics and shields (at least sometimes). So it can be a guide for general methods, and it may show you what NOT to buy, but you'll have to dig around a bit to determine just what are the best items to get. For instance, in the Deepeeka section of this board's Marketplace area, there should be a thread for each of the helmets that company manufactures, so browse back through the discussions to find styles good for your era and see what folks report about them. I just don't know the second century well enough to give good advice! And keep asking questions.

Good luck!

You mentioned you were in Tennessee?

get in contact with Leg V Alaude - http://web.utk.edu/~cohprima/

These are a great bunch of guys and they have been doing fantastic work.

Although they are focused on mid-1st century, I'm sure they'd be happy to talk and work with you
on making gear and all.

Ave Quintis,

Quote:I wish to represent the Legionare between 160-180 A.D.

First century A.D. is more popular with reenactment groups but there is one that focuses on the Hadrianic period ( up to 138 A.D.) : Legion Six Victrix. Website : link from old RAT. They are based in Los Angeles.

Also, you may want to read this thread about creating a "Marcus Aurelius Legionary" impression : link from old RAT

I have looked at Legio V, and they seem to be a pretty good group, however I will be attending ETSU and probably will not be able to make it to UT. That is why I figured I would start my own at college.

Don't worry about being able to get to UT all the time. Legio V has members all across the state. There are several of us in middle TN a good two hours or more away from UT. I think Daniel and John live as far away as Clarksville.

If you do decide to start your own group, then I wish you luck. If you need any help, Legio V will be glad to assist you. I would still recommend getting in contact with Robert (our centurion). Even if you want to start your own group, he should still be able to give you some recommendations.
