Centurion Hamata Style
#1
Guys,

I have a new 8mm Keltica Authentic Hamata, and now I am faced with a dilemma...
Do I contour-trim the lower edge and leather it like Rusty's, or leave it striaght at mid-thigh length as it came?

What say you others of the Centurionate?

Regards,

I say trim it in leather, especially if you dye it nice and bright it would look nice and finished.

If you have a subarmalis with pteryges, you can do it. I wouldn't do without...

I like both versions , I wear mine long with Ptregues and it looks fine but if I was handy enough to adjust it I would as I would prefer it shorter .

Ave,
Go with the curved style, as it looks "Roman" and not S.C.A. Medieval.
While you are at it, get a third one and mention it to me in your will as well.    . I'll do the same for you one day Big Grin D

It should work well. The option you voted should be already been 'voted for' and you should see results. This new board software allows you to change your vote.

Ok, so far it looks like I'll be chopping some links out and binding the new lower edge in leather.
Maybe use the excess for a doubler or something... after all it is punched/rivetted DSC maille.

I'll wait a while longer in case there is more input.

The SOTW Centurion Hamata is extremley light, in the range of 12-14 pounds only. In the age of restricted baggage allowances when flying, every pound counts.

While the Facilis Stele comes to mind as one of the best examples of this style of hamata, there are a few other steles of not only Centurions wearing a trimmed or tailored hamata, but also an Optio in one case, and a Miltes in another. They more or less follow the style of Facilis. The Arch of Orange also has examples of Legionary types wearing both the tailored looking hamata as well as the more traditional mid thigh length shirts. While the arch is sculptural evidence, the metopes have both the Legionarys and the Barbarians in realistic fighting stances and postions, leading me to beleive, at least, that the artist(s) were familiar with the subject matter.

When I get home from , I would be happy to post some pictures on the above if folks are interested.

Quintus, shoot me a PM if you need help with the leather work. I have stitched leather on to hamata before.
