Is there a reference, better on line, about unit abbreviations?<br>
For example:<br>

Contubernium VI?<br>

Don't know if we've talked about this before or not. From what I know, cohorts were numbered, but centuries were NOT--they were known by the name of the centurion. HE had the designation of "hastatus prior", etc., but I don't know if that carried over to the century itself. Which brings up the really big question of what happened when a centurion got promoted--did he take his troops with him? I mean, a lot of them were marking his name on their gear, yes?<br>

I don't know if there is anything solid about how a contubernium might be referred to. I'd bet against a number, more likely the file leader's name was used. But that doesn't really seem to have been used in any official capacity, anyway. A man's centurion and his legion seem to have been the most important things. The cohort designation shows up on at least one fragment from a signum, but I don't know if that's a confirmed legionary piece or simply from an auxiliary standard.<br>

That's all just off the top of my head, though. Anyone else got harder data?<br>
