Belt length
#1
I am having a belt made. However, I cannot decide how long the belt should be. Obviously, the length of the belt will determine the number of belt plates. The number of plates will then determine the cost

Therefore, is the length of the belt determined based on the measurement of my waist with just the tunic?

OR

Is the belt length determined based on the measurement of my waist with the tunic, subarmalis, and lorica?

I would think that the belt length determined based on just the tunic measurement is logical. Otherwise, a legionary would have to have two belts. One belt for the tunic and another belt for the armor.

Of course if a belt is made using just the tumic measurment, then when the same belt is put onto the armor, there will be large areas of the leather without plates. Then again, not all leather belts were covered completely with belt plates.

Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated

I usually ask for one that will fit me in a tunic, but say it needs to be able to go up to a certain(ie armour clad) measuement. That way it will fit me for both. Hope that helps some.

That is correct, in fact you should make the leather belt a bit shorter (about 5cm shorter) than your waist measurement because otherwise it will be too long when the buckle is added...

Yeah, what Jef said. The part that will not have any plates on it when on armour, is usually the thinner part that goes through the buckle, which is totally normal.

I think the person making your belt will understand this anyway, as the one I had made, I sent him the measurement and it fits.

Perhaps you could allow a little extra length in case you become larger with age as I have! Or have a extra good holiday dinner - Merry Christmas!

If the belt turns out too long over your tunic, simply pad it out with a generous amount of waist sash, an authentic and practical solution!
