1066 x 3

For all you fans of the Normans this may be old news, but there seems to three films in the works on the Battle of Hastings.

From the looks of the (poster?) image this looks like someone may have actually done some research on what people look like. The plot and storyline may be another thing altogether.

And...

Our other readers can perhaps supply more.
(Hey! I finally beat Narukami on a film post!)

You sure did beat me to the punch Gaius...I did not see this one coming at all.

I do find it interesting that for this new Daniel Crag film no one is listed as playing the part of William (or did I just miss that?)

There is a little info about this film,

http://www.reverieproductions.com/htmls/press.html

http://www.1066themovie.biz/

The second site does list a part for William but an actor has yet to be cast.

Then there is this MySpace site, but I do not have the time to wade through it so can not say if there is any useful information there or not. It looks like there might be for those with the patience to read through it all.

On the other hand I did find this site that has a few interesting comments and some footage of the re-enactment staged in 2006.

Probably the reason for the lack of a good novel, or Shakespeare play, or Hollywood film on the Battle of Hastings is the confusion on how to present the outcome of the battle. Was it a victory or a defeat? Was Harold a tragic hero or an incompetent usurper? Was William the Conqueror a bold leader bringing civilization and culture to backwater England or a greedy grasping in secure invader?

This is an interesting point, but might well be said of many battles throughout history.

After all there are some who believe Caesar was a tyrant who destroyed the Republic, while others think him a true champion of the people against the greedy Senators.

More to the point, there were three films in pre-production on Alexander the Great but Oliver Stone beat the others to the gate and they continue to languish in development hell. (One project by director Martin Scorsese and the other by Baz Luhrmann. Both have said they still want to make their films on Alexander, but as Stone's film was not a mega hit it will be difficult for even these directors to find the money for their versions of Alexander.) It seems unlikely that all three of these 1066 films will get made, but if they do it will be interesting to compare their different takes on the story.

Thanks for the posting Gaius -- yet another film project to keep an eye on.

If anyone could find out the details, I know Narukami could.

Whatever gets made, will have to work hard to Top "The Warlord" (1966, I think), even though it is not the Norman Conquest per se. Still one of the best films of it's kind anywhere.

That more films on this topic, or period, have not been made is still a mystery to me, considering how many boddice-rippers have been written. I think there one book about Norman Lords lusting after Anglo-Saxon Ladies being protected by Handsome Young Huscarls for every single member of the actual historic population. If I remember right, one Norman lusted after some fleeing maiden with such determination she, and he, wound up in Nebraska, or Tijuana, or someplace, before she realized she actually loved him.

Except in the 11th C I'm not so sure that the Saxons wore their hair long - Have a look at the Bayeaux Tapestry

The guy on the poster looks like a 5th - 6th C Saxon.

It will be interesting to see how they work that "Saracen woman" into the plot. The widely traveled Hardrada could easily have had a Saracen concubine, I suppose. It's probably a sop to the Muslims to show that Muslims were esteemed and influential in 11th century northern Europe.

Caecilia Holland's first novel, "The Firedrake" was about Hastings and would make a decent film.

Further proof, as if any were needed, that the Chinese really did travel the entire world leaving their cultural influences everywhere.

Absolutely correct Robert -- such a statement does give one pause.

We can hope for the best, but given Hollywood's track record it is a faint hope at best. Even so I will remain optimistic until we know more and can make an informed judgement. :? ? ?

Yes... I saw the Saracen woman too and that's where I closed the window...

"One more kingdom of heaven", I said. Could be great, action and all that things but we will be hurt in our History Big Grin
