I think he refers to the boxes you find, along the roads in Greece?
I remember seeing them around Argos, they are put up to remember family who have died in accidents and disasters, IIRC.

That is my only experience of these, but as you say they do this in other parts of Europe too? This is quite facinating to see a link to the past still ongoing in some form today.

In a much simpler form: a picture of your (grand)parents on a cabinet/table and a candle light next to it. Still used a lot in the Netherlands, at least.

That is true. In India, they have photos of various deities and family on a side table, with candles and offerings too. Not so far apart really.
