Republican scuta patterns
#1
Does anyone have good pictures of republican shield patterns from paintings, reconstructions, really anything? Excluding things like vvv shield transfers (which are too small for what I need) I've been fruitless in my search. Anything you've got would be much appreciated.

What period of the Republic are you looking for? For early in Augustus' reign see the Arch of Orange. There's also a ship relief (probably celebrating Actium) with shield designs. I'll bet Caesar's men used the same eagle wing blazons. Osprey's book, Republican Roman Army 200–104 BC, has designs for that period.

Thanks, but I'm looking for Punic/Macedonian wars era shield patterns. Any design typical of the period would work, animal, geometric, mythological symbols. I'm involved in the modding of RTW over at the Total War Center and right now I'm completley overhauling shields. The Imperial shields were easy, tons of stuff on that. But my web/osprey/Connolly searches haven't brought up anything usable.

Edited by: Acutulus at: 11/3/04 10:36 pm

I suspect Macedonian/Punic period scuta were generally plain, like the sculpted examples on the Monument of Aemilius Paullus or the earlier examples on currency-bars. The Osprey mentioned does have one example of a sculpted shield from this period, from Spain, with a wolf's-head boss, but that's about all there is, I think.

Yes, there isn't much evidence to suggest the widespread use of shield balzons during the Punic Wars. Blank would probably be best.

I was debating if I should just leave them blank, several people have done that and it does look pretty good in the game. Thanks for the help, and to whom it may concern, thanks for the great site!

Edited by: Acutulus at: 11/11/04 2:47 am
