"Antike Helme" - Anyone familiar with it?
#1
Hi there!

I have been drooling over this book for some time now:

Is anyone familiar with it? Thanks in advance!

If I'm right I've been looking in that book in the RGZM bookshop in Mainz on the last conference, and the price was the only reason I didn't buy a copy. Nice articles, drawings and a lot of info.

Thanks Jurjen! I would like to have a book with lots of colour pics of original helmets. Do you think this one would fill the need?

Have seen many books that weekend, so don't know of it was with lots of drawings or pictures, but Christian Koepfer recommended it and I'm sure he or Jasper could tell you more about this title.

I browsed through the book as well and would have bought it if it weren't so expensive. It has many pictures, but not of Roman helmets only but also of earlier Italian cultures such as the Etruscans. But at the RGZM it was only EUR 77.00! I know that Jasper's got the book.

Hi,

It's certainly a fantastic book. Not only Roman. Great part of the book is about Greek helmets, then about Italian, Celtic and Roman helmets only until the early principate (+ some gladiatorial helmets). No late helmets. Many... ehm... I mean MANY great photos and drawings of original helmets (mostly black and white, only exceptionally in colour). There is a more than 150 pages catalogue of original helmets with photos of them and information about them. And very informative, scholarly texts on the development of the helmets.

Really great book, but be warned - as I wrote, major part of the book is not about Roman helmets and also there are no late helmets at all.

May be the content (a little bit shortened) could shed some further light...:
