Did you take a look at the other items for sale, including the helmets? Looks like some of the ex-Guttman collection coming up for sale. Anyone know how much they've appreciated in price since then?
A very similar shield boss is shown on the stele of C. Valerius Crispus of Legio VIII from Weisbaden (not on the imagebase yet unfortunately).
Ave Crispus,

the shield boss of Your namesake seems to show a lion, some interpreted it as a bull, what was the legion's zodiac sign.

But there is yet the grave stone of Caivs Castricivs Victor serving with legio II Adivtrix at Aquincum, that shows a face as shield boss, perhaps a gorgo medusa or possibly something like the one shown above.

It can be seen at the image base:
Thanks Uwe,

I realised already that Valerivs Crispvs' stele showed something other than an anthropomorphic face and really meant to hold it up simply as an example of an embossed boss in sculpture. Tiredness meant I chose my words poorly and forgot about the better example of Castricivs Victor which you have mentioned. Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention.
