Type A pugio scabbard from Vindonissa or Hod Hill?
#1
Valete,

I'm doing research about a certain type A pugio sheath.

You can see a reconstruction by Erik Lechl here:

On his website it is written that this sheath was found at Vindonissa (Switzerland). I found the sheath in J. Obmann's book (Studien zu römische Dolchscheiden des 1. Jahrhunderts n. Chr.) and it is said there to have been found at Hod Hill (UK).

I know there are some mistakes in Obmann so I'm not sure who is right. Does someone know?

Also in the description in Obmann's book I read that the enamel found on this scabbard was yellow, whereas Lechl used red enamel on his reproduction. Yellow enamel together used together with brass would not make for a great colour contrast. What I'm wondering about is if the yellow enamel was originaly red and became yellow through deterioration or if it really was yellow. Does anyone have info on this?

Valete,
Falco

Salve Falco,

This does look suspiciously like the Hod Hill dagger and scabbard. The enamel on the original scabbard is yellow. I don't know about potential discolouration of the enamel though, as another scabbard recovered from the same site still had clearly red enamel.

Vale,

Celer.

Erik Lechtl took Ira's surname when they married - so now he is a König!
