Google finding "orphan" book rightholders
#1
Google got in trouble but settled on their effort to scan and index books. Part of the settlement is that Google will look for 'orphan' owners for out of print books to make them available on Google. Sounds like H Robinson possibility, among others.

FAQ of Google Settlement

Quote:20. What is the role of the Book Rights Registry? What is its charter, and who will manage it?

The agreement requires that a newly created independent, not-for-profit Book Rights Registry will be established for the purposes of locating rightsholders, collecting and maintaining accurate rightsholder information, providing a way for rightsholders to request inclusion in or exclusion from the project, distributing payments earned from online access provided by Google, and representing rightsholders’ interests in connection with similar programs that may be established by other providers. The Books Rights Registry will be managed by a board of directors consisting of an equal number of author representatives and publisher representatives.

Maybe they're riding the wave of Google, but this book has been out of print for quite a while, and is now available through Amazon as a Kindle edition from the publisher. And they don't have to print/distribute a thing.

Now that you mention it, the going Abebooks price starts at $105 US minimum, and I've seen copies go for over $200 US. I think what this means is that the publishers, who watch the market, aren't going to sell (eg) HR Robinson for the original $25US, but the market price of $200US. And that on the Kindle!

We want talk of price of ebooks? You have seen that the price is the same of paper book version? Not only the publishers insert the DRM which limit the purchaser right to use as he want a legally purchased object, but they make a bigger profit.

About the out of catalog book, i see in these day that a masterpiece of ancient cartography like Janni "La mappa e il periplo" is out of catalog.
