That looks very much like the helmet from
Corfu Jim!

Magnus, I'm not saying they didn't !
But you also see a variety of sculptures wearing a helmet similar to the one in Jims post, but they can't all be officers? I would go with a variety of helmets as per the choice on the individual. I would have worn a full blown corinthian myself, but that would make me the odd one out I guess!

Oh for sure! The pic of the helm Jim posted looks...better than the one generally accepted as worn by officers by reenactors. Maybe DSC or Deepeeka can start making one of those as well.

I'm betting that a great many Roman commanders went into battle secretly hoping for a shot at the spolia opimia for personally killing the enemy commander and stripping off his armor. It was the ultimate honor and he'd need to keep a helmet handy for that.

Quite right John.
As I remember it, Germanicus was known for riding into enemy lines hoping to kill the enemy commander in single combat. I Do not remember where I read that but no doubt one of our members has the reference at hand.

Generals may not have worn their helmets all the time but I have no doubt they had one at the ready close at hand.

Absolutely. As an impression of one, I'd say going helmet-less was ok.

Ok,

So either the one that Tarbicus showed or one of the Nix jobs should suffice?

I should have clarified that the actual application is for a Shakespeare production of Marc Antony and Cleopatra. The director is quite hell-bent on the Attic helmet I mentioned earlier. I am trying desperately to give her the helm of her dreams

My lads will be serving as extras... filling in as the Roman soldiers for the production... So we should have a fun time of it Big Grin

Ave to all,

I have asked before on this site if anyone has or knows of where I might find any other photos of the state that Tarbicus has show above. But got no answer from anyone. The illustration of the helm and armour used in the Osprey book is a bit different as it Terry Nix's helm. If I can get enough decent photos of it, I plan to have one of our fellows who make helms and armour make it for me. The ohter helment that I remember from an earlier thread was the helment of Drusus. Again, the problem was the helment was not clear enough in the photo to even draw a sketch from to work off of. If anyone has better photos, Please post them! I agree that while the preatorian helms look great, they also look "Hollywoodish" Thanks,

Ave,
After my last post, I remembered that Joe at Lonely Forge makes a "Thracian" helm that comes very close to the Rhodes statue's helment.

I'm thinking that if I cannot find a better photo of said statue, I'm going with one of Joe's helms albeit with a different design more in line with the statue's decoration. Comments anyone?

I recall seeing a similar helmet made some where, but cannot recall if it was Joes work or someone else...

I would go with that if I was you, as they seem to be as easy to get a hold of as hens teeth!

Ave, Gaius,
I'm pleased that you think that Joe's Thracian helment slightly modified would be a good idea. Frankly, since I can't find any better photos of either Drusus or the Rhodes Trophy, I think it may be my ONLY option  You said that that style is as common as hen's teeth over on your side of the pond. It may be that Joe may be the easiest way of getting one. Unless someone else is making one that they might have in stock. Comments, any one :?:

Here's a really nice example of a Thracian helmet. Seems to have been tinned.

I don't know if it has been mentioned before but deepeeka makes this helmet:

It's the helmet called 'Alexander the Great' helmet.

Might be usable Smile
