Part of the city wall and a tower of Noviomagus/Nijmegen, dating from 160-170, have been found:

Roman tower in Nijmegen, c. 160-170
The remains are not from the legionary fort, but from the civilian settlement in Nijmegen-West (corner of the Kanaalstraat-Waterstraat), which on the map below is the most left dark green area:

Oddly enough, most papers speak of a watchtower, while in fact it's a tower from the town wall, which is of course entirly different. Put me on the wrong foot initially!

I think it's more a shame they are destroying the place by building normal houses on it. Why couldn't they preserve this place, or do we have in the Netherlands so many historical places, which are more interesting or important than this one?
Maybe we must send a message to Portaal ( http://www.portaal.nl/contact.aspx ) the corporation which are building these houses with our concerns

I understand why they're building here, and I don't know the importance of the founds in the Netherlands. What I know is that it isn't one of the important roman things in Nijmegen. (but the tower could be important, but that isn't my field of interest). More important are the sites of the Hunnerberg, Kops Plateau, Valkhof area and the Temple complexes in Nijmegen west (in the area of this wall). Unfortanatelly here is already been built on.

And that's my problem, too much of our heritance is already destroyed. And yes I understand why they are building. But why not preserve a little bit of our ancient history?

Hopefully you're not the only one who feels that way. Surely there are historic preservation groups in the Netherlands is there not? It might not be a bad idea to start galvanizing support to show that you're not the only one who cares and go to them with it.

It's because the local government has recently had a fancy landscape architect come up with a grand plan for the redevelopment of exactly that area in which the historical features of that part of Nijmegen should have got a place. He did so at the tune of an amount with a large number of zeros. Sadly, he had no clue what to do with the Roman era settlement, so it pretty much disappeared from the plan... Politics, anyone?

At least we're taking care of the plans of the Kops Plateau, where also a landscape architect was working out new plans, and we (stichting Romeinenfestival) give the area a brand new view.

Speak for yourself! To me the civilian settlement is of no less importance than that big old legionary thingie on the Kops plateau!

What legionary thingy on the Kops Plateau? You're confusing your mountains (well, by Dutch standards that is). There was only an auxiliary fort and possibly an army HQ.

And I wasn't telling my own opinion on what's important, but that what Mark Driessen represents in his study of Roman Nijmegen. I think there're also lot of (almost unknown) import and special findings from for instance Hatert (which is all civil ). Okay, I find the Kops Plateau most interesting, as I did a lot of research on that subject recently, and planning to look up more.

I think the whole area should be declared a protected Historical site of worldwide importance, and all consruction (apart from reconstruction of the Roman sites) Banned for all time! :!:

So who's Mark Driessen to tell us what's important and what isn't? :wink: The military has received an enormous amount of attention, with the Valkhof coming up second. This western part is even less researched. Yes, well, Nijmegen has a bit of a reputation there. Just mention Waalkade, casino and Roman wall in one sentence. :x
