Questions about sarcina
#16
Greenwood bends easier than dry.
A marching camp is unlikely to set itself up for such operations.. staying a week? .. to make repairs or resupply? Then let's make stuff... heat or steam bending not possible? ... then affix and/or lash a short cross pole to a sapling..

I rather think that for a campaign poles would be purpose grown, contracted for and that extras would accompany the baggage

Another intriguing possibility when using a steam bent pole shaped into a "T" is that it can be used for holding up a tent...

Presumably they'd manufacture their equipment before leaving the "comfort" of the fortress?

It's an intriguing thought that we may all be barking up the wrong tree. If the whole furca idea didn't outlive Marius (strange that Caesar doesn't mention it ... strange that Josephus doesn't mention it ...), and the non-forked pole on Trajan's Column seems only to be a food-and-water expedient (a water skin and a water satchel, a cooking tin and beaker, and a food net), then the luggage that Junkelmann's boys faithfully humped around on a pole presumably should have been riding in carts with the tents and shields, or should have stayed back home at the fortress. Interesting thought.

...very interesting thoughts indeed.

We do assume much.. loads of gap filling... grasping at willow wisps and the like...

Quote:Here, the author convincingly demonstrates that the two bags, usually identified as cloak bundle and satchel (e.g. in this thread), are actually two different types of water skins. Finds of leather parts from Egypt make the identification virtually certain. (The reason for the two different designs is less clear.)

A little thread necromancy Smile

The link was only to the contents listing of the journal. As far as I know, the articles are not, and have never been, available electronically. Unless someone knows differently ..?
