Staining canvas tents. A report.
#16
We use a water based wood stain.

I tried a test piece using thin washes of latex house paint. The wood stain is superior!

The brand probably does not matter.

We use hand pump sprayers (2 gallon size) because I don't have a power sprayer. Though power sprayer will push the stain deeper into the fabric and would be faster.

We stain on a flat surface. Less run-off with a manual spayer

We have three old tents of heavy regular cotton duck canvas... stained, dirty, some mildew stains, some food stains, some mud, some soot.. applied the stain without cleaning the tents! No problem!

Washing? Used to. But then we discovered how excellent the "lived in look" was. Pristine white sunforger or the slightly duller regular canvas was always too "neat". Next thing you know you're hanging your tunic on a hanger between events or (insert ominous music sounds here!) ironing your tunic! Egads!!

Seriously: An EXCELLENT way to wash canvas is on a flat surface with powdered boraxo laundry soap (or equilvalent) . DO NOT RINSE! ... or if you need to rinse follow the rinse by spraying down the tent with a solution of boraxo soap and let it dry in place.

BORAX is a fire retardant! A fabric whitener.. Also a bug killer. Also a fertilizer which means if your flat surface is a lawn... or drains into your lansdcape... used to fire proof kids clothes.

Boraxo soap is an easy to find form.

Actually, the tent Lucius refers to are a bit naff, but definately better than nothing.
We definately need to purchase a better, more accurate one.
Any suggestions? A canvas tent that is made to emulate the leather Roman tents would be ideal! :?:

Hib, so I get this right (and the wifey buys off on a tent purchase) I can fertilize the lawn, pesticide it too, do the whites that day for her AND fireproof the kids clothes all at the same time! By gods Hib you are the man!!

We just tell them the originals were leather, ours are painted to look like it. The comments we get from other re-enactors have all been positive... most of the time they stare a while then walk up and feel it, and finally say "Oh.. you painted them! They look great!"

It was amazing how it changed the look of the camp!

Friday I do our last one, #10!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WOOHOOO

And NO... SOTW will not be offerring stained ones any time soon. Happy to send instructions and a pnther though...

As much as I do not like "fooling the public" the look of brown tents is truly superior to white.. a far better impression...
