How to make a embossed Vindonissa cingulum plate.
#31
Pitch works much better indeed. You can adapt the ingredients of the pitch to the kind of work you are doing.
But for small projects like beltplates it's a bit of a hassle. You have to heat the pitch, put in the plate, heat the pitch again, take out the plate, clean of the pitch (this can be very difficult at times)...

When I made all of the Straubing Chamfrons I found that the best material was not pitch but a large block of Plastercine, that is the real older stuff not the more modern play dow. I did all the chaseing out of the figures and lines on a flat steel block, then worked the Repousse' from both sides. The inner surface hammering is where one works down the metal into the plastercine, then for the outer surface one fills the already beaten metal with the plastercine and then the fine detail of repousse' is carried out on the outer surface. It realy works well for once one fills a figure with the plastercine it is left on a cold steel block which helps harden it.

Having seen Brian's lovely chamfrons and greaves etc. up close, I can certainly vouch for the plasticine! It obviously works very well.

It does help to have the wonderful skills that Brian posesses though!

Today i have made the buckle.

It's made of some pieces of brass forged, soldered, and then decorated with punctim and tinned.

Tomorrow i will connect it with a belt plate.

Okay, no step-wise pictures here Sad What did you use as basic material? Brass sheet? Rod? Flat modellbuilding profile?

Sorry, i haven't enough time.

There are made all of brass sheet. The basic forms of cutting are in the drawing, only to explain how is made.

To get the curved profile, a hammering with a ball ended hammer is used.

Excellent work as always Cesar. I hope that one day I will emulate the excellent step by step tutorials that you do so well, as well as some of the work that you do so well.

A well deserved laud point my friend.

Brian,

Having seen your Straubing greaves and chamfrons myself, I too would like to congratulate you on some wonderful work. The plasticine certainly seems like a good idea.

Hello,

The buckle is yet hinged with his plate. This is the roman way to put a buckle in a plate with lateral tubes:

And today, i have made the pugio frogs. I have forged and solderes some bars, and add an old deepeka's "apron stud".

Now, i have to connect them with his plate, as i have done with the buckle.

Very useful topic Cesar, my compliments!!

Nice to see that you make the buckle of brass sheet, I make them with casting.

Well, i think romans used both methods, but the cast buckles were more used.

Romans use brass sheet or similar, because some buckles are too thin to have been made with casting.

I have made in that way in order to made a diferent buckle, because all the buckles of the belts of my group are casted.

Yes indeed, I have a autentic and original Roman buckle, what is made by using casting.

Well, i was'nt happy with the pugio frog i have made yesterday. So, i have made some modifications, adding a central bar to give more strenght, and made a new stud.

I think now it's better.

You can see is hinged yet to the belt plate.
