Like Jurjen I use my hooded cloak as a sleeping bag, and I sleep on a deer skin (acts as a ground sheet). Of course extrablankets always help! A kit bag provides a pillow. My son provides the heat (a Roman water bottle!)

I was just reading, in a late roman/byzantine campaign in the snow, that the Rus soldiers slept in their shields.
