Hinge Pin Techinques.... in 2 parts

The following photos illustrate how we secure hinge pins within the fitting's barrell and thus how they are peened them without warping the hinge pin or hinge barrel.

The method or technique has been around for some time, predates our existence as a club!

Pic #1 shows a lobate hinge gripped by two vice grips made for sheet metal. The one on ethe right of the pic has been reshaped to fit the width of the hinge. Since lobate hinges come in several sizes we have about 12 cut to different widths.

The hinge pin is inserted into the barrel, the hinge body gripped tightly with the vice grips and as close to the barrel as possible. Trim the hinge pin leaving just enough material to peen. Place the end of the hinge pin on the "anvil". Lightly peen one end then rotate and lightly peen the opposite end. Repeat as needed

Picture Number 3 shows how to peen a large Newstead hinge pin . The sheet metal vice grip's throat is too short.
Simply insert some heavy guage metal plates cut to fit the width of the hinge as shown in pic #4.

Pics #5 and #6 show how two standard vice grips can be use to peen hinge pins on other seg fittings. And as with pic #4 some small metalplates can be cut to fit the various widths of the various and assorted fittings in all their varying widths!

Peening the buckle hinge fitting poses a slightly different problem. The solution was a vice grip used in welding or riveting as it can reach around the fitting.

The first two pictures, #7 and #8, show how to clamp around one hinge pin using the welding vice grip shown in pic #12. The clamping plate was ground down to fit better on the fitting.

Pic #9 shows one way to peen the ends of the buckle axle without collapsing the fitting or the axle.

Pic #10 and Pic #11 employ the welders vice grip. This is more secure.

Hibernicus, I like the way you're doing this. simple, and anybody can find the tools around, if there's a hardware store in the area. To help that pin "want to peen", hit the center of the pin with a centerpunch. That starts the metal moving out an 90 degrees to the long axis.

Works for me, anyhow. And it doesn't have to have the modern commercial half dome on both ends, it just has to be bigger than the hinge tube on both ends, that's all.

Another trick is to use a chisel and cut a cross into the end of the pin...light taps with the hammer.. just enough...
