Having started this one off I then dropped out of the loop for about nine months and have only just caught up with the fascinating twists and turns of the many possibilities of the story (as well as the fascinating sidetracks on dragons etc!). I'm not too worried about 'off-topic' meanderings until my wife informs me that its 2 in the morning and there's another life!
Thank you all very much for your speculations, reasoned analysis, hopeful conjecture etc,etc. I'm not sure which is the most convincing but they are all captivating. Thank you Mak, I like your submission of 11 January especially - it seems to satisfy the longings of the heart and the questions of the mind (mine anyway!) without displaying too much of an Achilles heel !
