A question about late Roman infantry...
#16
Technically, couldn't comitatenses simply follow their comes? Or the magister militum? If so, the last roman one in Gaul - self-proclamed - was Syagrius.
"O niurt Ambrois ri Frangc ocus Brethan Letha."
"By the strenght of Ambrosius, king of the Franks and the Armorican Bretons."
Lebor Bretnach, Irish manuscript of the Historia Brittonum.

Quote:From first principles you cannot have comitatenses, a term which derives from "comites" meaning "companions," without a Roman emperor for the soldiers to be companions of. Therfore, after Romulus Augustulus and Julius Nepos, there were no comitatenses as such in the West.

It's simply a military term. Like 'dragoons', or 'hussars' etc. It refers to the origin, but it should not be taken literally after some time.
