While browsing I came across this webpage that includes a free online (and PDF) version of Sir Guy Laking’s – A record of European Armour and Arms through Seven Centuries (all 5 volumes):

Much more free online books can be found here which have gone out of print and copyrights have expired.

There are a lot of free old books if you do a "google book" search.
