I've often read that The Arch of Orange features a Capricorn design on one of the shields which is attributed to Legio II Augusta. I've seen lots of interpretative illustrations, but not the original sculpture. Can anyone direct me to a photograph? Many thanks,
on which part of the arch should this be? I´ve found only some big scale pictures, not detailed ones...
-------------------------------------------------------
To what time period is that Carvoran tile dated? Where did you find that image?

Thanks.

Hi Andy,

I found it at the bottom of THIS PAGE. It´s a facsimile plaque of Legio II Augusta
recording work done at Benwell/Condercum now displayed at the Roman Army Museum, Carvoran.
The inscription is listed as RIB 1341; oddly this one is missed by Guy de la Bédoyère on his website. The dating would be Hadrianic-Antonine (117-80), for several more of II Augusta´s inscriptions were found in this are around that time:
c. 122-6: Hadrian's Wall: RIB 1634, 1637-8 and 1666,
139-43: RIB 2191 (Balmuildy), RIB 2186 from near Cadder, RIB 2180 from near Auchendavy,
139: RIB 1147, Corbridge,
140: RIB 1148 (1), Corbridge, and
155-9: RIB 1322 (14), Newcastle.

Have also been looking into this for a while, (leg 2 myself!) you might want to take a look at the shield cover from Roomburg (NL) which exhibits facing capricorns, though its a citizen auxiliary shield, it supports the notion of capricorns on shield boards. I have also heard of various applied copper alloy capricorns found in germany, possibly for shield boards?
I dont think the pegasus however appears in leg 2 iconography until the hadrianic period.
