Dr Ludwig Lindenschmidt and the Mainz monument
#1
Does anyone have a copy of Dr Ludwig Lindenschmidt 1880's drawings or paintings of the Mainz monuments or the stele of Cn Musius, the LEG XIV aquilifer?

Mr.Peterson stated that Lindenschmidt recorded the lightining bolts

I don´t have a pic here, but I may help out. both have lightning boilts that are "triangular", that is a zick-zack-line.
An original find of one of these shield decorations from Kalkriese has squares instead of the triangles:

I need a copy of Lindenschmidt's drawing or painting.

This post has been removed by the author. I do not see a point to being on a forum where moderators such as Matt Lanteigne aka Magnus can practice harassment and hypocritical behavior. RAT seems to have slipped into a place where people of this ilk can do or say whatever they want AND since he's a moderator, I guess it's all okay w/ the forum owners. Good luck, but I am done here.

This is the woodcut from Lindenschmit's 1882 Tracht und Bewaffnung (which differs from the illustration above, as you will see).

For those who are interested (probably very few) I have been working on an illustrated translation and annotated commentary of L's book (which is, in my opinion, the best book ever written on Roman military equipment). At the very least this will result in a digital edition of the German text available on the web soon as a PDF.

One HUGE difference is that Dr Mike's version of Lindenschmit's woodcut shows Musius wearing chainmail UNDER his pteruges. Seems he interpretted the tasselation on the ends of the "dags" as chain

He also made the lightining bolts much more angular.

AND he changed the shape of the shield

Interesting.

The drawings in T&B are rather stylised so don't go taking them too literally. When all is said and done, it's the original sculpture that counts. As a f'rinstance, the mail you mention is indeed the tassels at the end of the pteryges (the first drawing is much more accurate in that respect), a fact which is clear today if you look at the sculpture (unfortunately I haven't yet had the time to add Musius to my tombstones page). Attached is a scan (from a contact print so a bit blurry, the original negs being much crisper and with a wider tonal range - hope to have my film scanner up and running in the next couple of days) of the shield.

OH! Yup, those are wavy lightning bolts, no two ways about it. Have to say that I really can't make out the edges of the shield in this photo, nor in the drawing farther up, but yeah, I've seen other 19th century illustrations differ from reality quite a bit.

Good stuff, everyone, thanks!

For those interested in shield blazons and stuff to put on the front of your Big Bent Board, you could have a look at this PDF from Klio.
