Will The Real Legio XIV Please Stand Up!
#16
Mr Peterson has posted an interesting response to queries about the Legio XIV shield emblem, shield shape etc..... on RAG (yahoo's Roman Army Group)

Does anyone have a copy of Dr Ludwig Lindenschmidt 1880's drawings of Leg XIV stele?

Well, as I've pointed out before, what happens on other forums should stay there. As long as none of the nonsense from RAG spills over to here, I have no problem with someone getting information from knowledgable sources.

I started a conversation about the LEGIO XIV shield emblem HERE because of the thread on a National Legion and the claim by one gentleman that the LEG XIV shield emblem is the only KNOWN Legion emblem.

We have since learned that it isn't.

I also learned that the current accepted and often reproduced LEG XIV emblem is likely wrong.

I started this thread to :
- seek information about the LEG XIV "emblem"
- to share what I've learned
- to get input and feedback on what I posted
- to inform anyone interested that there is another conversation elsewhere

I would very much like to quote Peterson's posts at RAG. His celebrity makes him INFLUENTIAL, gives what he writes a certain level of auctoritas and that affects all of us. I think at some point what he writes needs to quoted, in brief, so that a reasoned conversation about some of his interpretations can ensue which I believe would greatly benefit the Community as a whole.

This thread is about the Legio XIV emblem. I'll start an explanatory thread about the shape of Legio IX's scutum and cite the archaeology that went into the decisions that led up to the shape and size.

Marsh,
We had this earlier, if you are unhappy with a mods decision this is not the right way. We have pm´s here on the board.
Please immediately remove the curse-word abbreviations and foul language and read the forum ruleas again. There is a link to them below in my signature.

Well, from what I've seen on RAG, there is more vulgarities on that board than a "Fifty Cent" concert, and people seem to take on the persona of 2 year old children with spoiled diapers. So if you prefer that, by all means.

Otherwise, feel free to post here, but keep the child's play on RAG. And if you "wrote" the rules, maybe you should abide by them. (and don't worry about the abbreviations, I made a note to fix that).

Sorry Hib, I know this isn't about the shield blazon, but I am not convinced that P. Flavoleius Cordus' shield is supposed to be flat. It seems to be a little dished and whilst this could simply be a sculptural necessity to depict his body in the round, it may not necessarily be so. It may be that in sculpting the shield to be depicted in slung position the sculptor simply did not make a very good job of depicting a dished shield. He would hardly have been the first and the proportions on the Rhineland stones are not always quite as accurate as some would have us believe.

I recognize that P. Flavoleius Cordus's shield could be dished, maybe even a semi-cylndrical oval.

Sculpting in relief has unique problems for the modern viewer in regard to perspective ESPECIALLY if the sculptor carved with the knowledge that it was to be painted to depict a more realistic perspective... wonderful tricky things can be done with shading and tinting! We only see it as it is not as it was.

I have found the research material presented in this thread to be very interesting. As far as anyone being incorrect about this material it goes to the nature of the material as new finds are published, old finds rediscovered, previous authors found to be incorrect in aspects of their research etc. It shows that checking and rechecking new developments and original source material is always a good idea.

Aren't four threads on this same general topic enough? I have to wonder what's up with all this.
