RANDOM REENACTMENTS FOR FUN

CITY BUS TRIP

A group of Roman Soldiers boards the city bus and rides to the Bus Terminal where they board the bus for the return trip. If asked what they are doing: "We are on the way to meet Caesar at the Rubicon."

POST THE GUARD

The Centurion marches his troops and post guards at a downtown public building or a foot bridge. Guards are rotated on the 1/2 hour. Public inquires: Guard - "Guarding against barbarian raids." Anything else " You will have to ask the Centurion"

ON THE WAY TO CAMPAIGN

A couple of Roman soldiers with full marching kit stand by side of the road hitchhiking. They wave a sign on period material that says "GAUL"

THE CHASE

Several armed barbarians hike a well traveled hiking trail or path. They tell passersby "If you seen the Romans don't tell them you saw us" A little while behind them the Roman soldiers in pursuit inquire "Have you seen the Barbarians? We are after them."

CONQUER NEW LANDS

Two barbarians show up unexpectedly at a pubic venue such as a park where a group of unsuspecting people are gathered. They have a basket of wooden swords and a bundle of spears. They gain everyone attention by blowing a horn and announce the the Roman Legions are on there way to conquer "our" homeland and try to get the crowd to take up arms and help them defend. Whereupon the the Legion appears in force and "arrests" the ringleaders confiscates the arms and marches away victorious. Some people in the crowd are plants and in on the plan
and either oppose or support the resistance.

Hmmm, I wonder how many of these would bring about a response from the armed response teams..... Sad D

It looks like the people in Cork see Romans march through town every day and barely take notice!

I so want to do something like that in Boston MA - something like "Romans on Vacation"; video of us Romans and Aux on the Train into Boston, and sight-seeing some landmarks...

Of course a trip to the North End as well. Big Grin

But, knowing Boston, they are likely to call out a terrorist threat, shut down the city, seal off the roads, and arrest all of us (yeah even if we were just in tunic and belt with pugio...)

Sad...

I mean, if Boston goes nutsy with some "hidden" light-brite signs of Mooninites from "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" movie; nearly shutting down the city with Bomb Squads all over...Who knows what a ruccus a bunch of Romans would cause

although the headline "Romans Take Boston" has a nice ring to it Tongue

John,
You posess a twisted and creative soul..... I admire that! Reenacting as performance art. Perhaps we here in the U.S. should begin planning something to coincide with Tax Day on April 15th. It'd be a sure bet photo-op since there is usually media coverage of the lines of last minute filers at post offices. We could be there to "Gently Remind" those what happens to those who fail to "render unto Caesar".
Andy,
Boston might not be as difficult as you think. A couple years ago I had to ride the T (subway) from the People's Republic of Cambridge into the Statehouse while in full CivWar battle rattle. I called the MBTA police and the Duty Sgt. told me they had no problem with me carrying my musket and bayonet. He informed the officers stationed along the route that I'd be coming through. The only difficulty was in not appearing to brush off the folks who wanted pictures, especially the T Cops. I was in a bit of a hurry. Time permitting, I could have just ridden and chatted all day. Maybe we could arrange one of the Boston Duck Tours (WWII amphibious trucks) to ferry us across the Charles River.

Count me in on the tax day reminder! Sounds like fun! As for the Duck crossing I have my rev-war uniform so lets go!

Idea How about we just walk around Boston asking all the traffic cop directions to the liberty Bell in Latin and see how long it takes for them to come up with a Catholic priest. Confusedhock:

Another fun activity is a visit to a local school class. We average at least one a month during the school year, with students from all ages, primary through secondary schools, mostly latin and history.

Usually, it's two of our members, and the students really like them. Word of mouth travels quickly once you do one or two of these, and you will be turning down as many as you accept (I limit us to one per month because we all work).

Advertising them on your website is a good way to offer this, and it gives you a chance to put on your kits without having to wait for a large, organized event.

It goes almost without saying that preparation and research are a muct for these, so that you can be clear about what is known vs what is conjecture. It's important to us to be as accurate as our research allows.

yup, I love going to schools and colleges, Edge.

I have my Imperial as well as my Late Republican. Working on some other (Medieval/Renaissance) impressions as well.

Clodius - DUCK TOURS! Great Idea! Reenact some amphibius assault somewhere, muahahah!

When we did the thousand mile march during the Mobile Pompeii Exhibit at Mardi Gras, I was dressed as a civilian, and played around with the people by the streetside...they'd ask "Are you cold?" or "What are you wearing under that tunic?" And I'd answer "Quid dicesne?" or "Qualis verbae sunt?" And almost every time, they'd speak more loudly and slowly, so I would just reply in kind. I thought it was hilarious. Only a few of the more sober spectators got the joke. Oh, well. Good fun, nevertheless.

Good memory picture.
