If a vetran soldier after 25yrs of service was offered piece land how many actually surived to urn their reward and those that were discharged due to being badly wounded were they looked after by being awarded pension ? <p></p><i></i>

Scheidel estimates that only 45% of legionaries completed the full 25/6 years from a legion maintained at 95% of its paper strength. Mortality was c. 40% and a further 15% were invalided out over the service period due to injury etc. Mortality rates in the praetorian cohorts were higher, perhaps 58%, the high occurrence of epidemics in Rome being a key factor (think the Antonine plague introduced to the city by praetorians).<br>
