New Late Roman findings at the Münsterhügel in Basel
#1
Hello,
... I couldn't find out if you already knew this:
1.) http://www.archaeobasel.ch/ausgraben/ak ... /index.php
2.) http://www.archaeologie-online.de/magaz ... 5fb99057c9

Since it's written in German, here a brief summary in English:
In the process of enlarging the capabilities of the local "Museum der Kulturen"/"Museum Of Cultures" at Münsterplatz 20 in Basel, excavations were undertaken since this area had probably been "under settlement" since the times of about 80 B.C. .
Asides from more recent material there have been findings from the Roman Era but surprisingly few findings from the Middle Ages.
Asides of hardly datable earlier findings of the Roman Era some others, like foundations of a larger building, can be attributed to the end of the 3rd century AD while some, like a fragment of a tile that was stamped by the Legio Prima Martia, to the 4th century.
The second essay is speculating about the fact that there is now a second large Late Roman building asides the Horrea under the "Schulhaus zur Mücke" nearby that can be attributed to the late fortification, giving evidence to the thesis that besides Castra Rauracorum there was another essential roman stronghold in this area.
