That IS a beautiful photo -- but -- is it just this computer, or is anyone else seeing a red stripe in the lower right?

(Hoping it's just this puter!)

You're right, Wayne. Curious. Seems to be on the original, but not on this close-up. :?

Prolly a windoze thing - looks fine in Firefox 3 on Kubuntu with the latest NVidia drivers. You have a seriously widescreen monitor if you can fit that lot in, Duncan! BTW I've now got all my slides back so your wishes can be fulfilled ;-)

this is the perfect artwork for a stoner rock outfit made up of 4 seventeen-year old heavy smokers calling themselves TEMPLE WITCH or ROMAN WEED LORD.

Wow, those photos really are amazing. That one Jona posted is very Piranese: the juxtaposition of ancient lost grandeur with hints of modern life going on its shadow is very striking. Some may think that the construction crane in the background may take away from the image, but I think it nicely shows the nonstop march of time. Maybe someday an image like that will be made of the Eiffel Tower or the Empire State Building. Who knows?

You can not know how right you are. I happen to own an etching by Piranesi (the one bottom left, this one). You don't need to be a millionaire to buy one - I paid 300,000 for it. Lire, that is.

Lucky you! I fell in love with him when I bought a three-volume set of Gibbon several years ago illustrated with many of his etchings. Each is prefaced with a suitable quote by from the text.
