Making Roves.. bandoliers of roved rivets!

Making Roves and Roved Rivets

One of the first thing I have a new guy do is make roves and roved rivets.
It teaches him how to use a hammer, drift punch and rivet setting tool. By the time he's met his quota of 200 he knows enough to teach the next new guy!

Here is a series of photos illustrating how we do it. This is part of a much more extensive series of How To's

Save that using roves for all the leathering rivets is a myth stemming from Peter Connolly's inaccurate exploded-view diagrams of the various cuirasses. There were no roves on real Corbridge segmentatae save a small handful on the upper back- only 16 for a cuirass. The Romans were rather more practical and simply applied the flat-headed rivets from the inside out- the head preventing pull-through. The 16 large domed rivets of the upper back plates had to be applied from the outside, therefore roves were necessary as the peened end of the rivet was against the leather.

Matt, what do you think of the photo essay as a tutorial for making roves and roved rivets?

I agree completely with Matt. I have made my cingulum without roves too, using flat headed rivets with the head inside, and peening the outside until get rounded. With some practice, you will get completely round heads.

Oh well roves are actually correct for balteus plates  I have 3 originals that have at least one of their roves still in place.

I certainly like the use of a punch and chisel Sean- I do them that way myself.
