#1
I am wonder if many are finding the yahoo groups I set up to be a valuable resource or at least interesting? And if anyone had any suggestions for
improvements?

Personally I don't like yahoo groups in general, so therefore I think I wouldn't use it as my primary source.

But I think it is a good thing to have galeries/ databases with pictures (and wrote down details) of items. But I think Yahoo groups isn't the best way to do this. I would prefer systems like the imagebase on the main site. But then, you need a good moderator, who want to put a lot of time in that database, and those are hard to find.

(and I prefer pictures of originals over pictures of replica's, as, in my opinion at least, to many re-enactors base their outfit on re-enactors, without looking at the original sources and wrong prototypes are born)

Yahoo groups have their place, and in some ways are at least as easy as phbbc fora, such as RAT. It's easier to store photos, and they are useful when they aren't ant-sized people in the middle of large fields of grass, captioned, "Look at my kit improvements".

The quality of the photo is all important, but Jurjen has a point, there are, indeed, other places to store photos, photobucket, for example, that allow for a little higher resolution photos. OTOH, most of the time, it's not necessary to have a 3 megapixel picture of something, when 640 x 480 shows the general information that the majority of us want to see.

I don't join new Yahoo groups just to look at pictures, so I would say that's the worst way to do it. Better just to put them in Photobucket or even make a very simple free web page somewhere. That would allow you to add captions and descriptions, and to organize them easily. If you do that, though, USE THUMBNAILS! Otherwise the page takes forever to load.

I would be happy to contribute to image bases on RAT to replace the image storage on the different Yahoo groups I set up. There are a few links and files that might not transfer but not many. It would be better to have a single source rather than have to sign up for a lot of different Yahoo groups. The Yahoo groups don't get a lot of message traffic that being covered MUCH better here on RAT. One problem is I do not want to be a Moderator for the image bases. Not because I don't have the time or ability but because I have some concerns about some people having been made to feel very unwelcome to participate in RAT without having had an opportunity to be mentored about how to participate. I do not want to be responsible for starting any kind of Moderator conflicts. I have very strong feelings that RAT should try to be inclusive rather than exclusive even for persons whose interest in the Roman Army is primarily commerical.

Care to clarify, in public or in PM?
