Using two putty knives, use one to hold the cloth tight into the edge where the bowl meets the rim and use a second to start smoothing the cloth perpendicular to the edge of the shield. If it creases deeply, just pull it up slightly and smooth the crease out of the rim.
Next, continue to do this until the rim and bowl are perfectly smooth. I then use a putty knife to lightly tuck some of the excess material under the shield to make sure it tacks down tightly to the edge of the rim.
