Woad contains the same chemical that is in indigo. That is the color of new blue cotton denim jeans, in its most concentrated. So anything from new blue jeans to faded color would be appropriate if you're imitating woad. Royal blue might be a little dark, as it contains black (if you're mixing colors that is).

Which dipping in the vat makes a difference in color strength. A nice, rich, pure blue would be probably just about right. Not sure what the label will say for that. "Denim"?

I actually could not prove that woad was used for leather dye, but it was certainly used for cloth.
