Tarbicus, in another thread discussing the different possibilities of apron attachment, you showed us a gravestone with what appears to be a sewn-loop apron. Could you dredge that up again?

Thanks!

Quote:Hey guys, two of you have stated that it's wrong to have apron straps looped onto the belt.

This is unsupportable, as we simply don't know they never were and it's all down to how you interpret sculpture. Stating that straps were always attached to the back is not good IMHO.

Fair enough, but let me put it this way. These repros lack studs on the loop section, whereas in Roman artwork the studs continue all the way up--and generally the strap does not have a little kink at the bottom edge of the belt to indicate stitching the loop at that point. So even if you add studs to the loop section of a repro like this, the shape of the strap still won't quite match the original depictions. Stitching or riveting the apron directly to the belt still matches all the evidence better.

If someone comes up with a belt with good plates, studs, terminals, buckle, and frogs, but the apron straps have sewn loops at the top, I'll accept it! But I'd still say it's pointless--a movable apron doesn't affect the fit at all.

Of course, here I am trying to make SENSE out of something Roman! I should know better...
