Flavius Joseph about miles mainly used for non-combat duties
#1
I have read today on an italian reenactors magazine, that Flavius Joseph speaks about a part of the legion mainly used for heavy works as constructions, luggage, etc.
It is intended - following this opinion - they are the miles on the Trajan Column that wear the Segmentata because it is evident that they are mainly used for non-combat duties. While the "true" legionary is the one with the hamata.

I completely disagree of course with his conclusions, but it is very interesting the piece of Flavius Joseph, who could provide me with both english and latin verses?
Well, the Latin version would be a translation as well. You'd need the Greek one. Any refs in Josephus (it's a bit long, you see)
Greets

If the italian reenactors magazine is the same one I've read, the author also tells the segmentatae were exclusively made with leather (!), besides other nonsenses.
Not very serious to write, if not harmful, in my opinion...
Not saying any of this is true, but just imagine if it were ... what would that do to the 2004 re-enactment world?
Yep.. I stumbled upon that site not so long ago but I thought best not to mention it.
But, well, let's put it in perspective: some people think the pyramids were built by aliens, others believe Atlantis did lie at one time in the middle or the Atlantic Ocean, and so on..
