I have read today on an italian reenactors magazine, that Flavius Joseph speaks about a part of the legion mainly used for heavy works as constructions, luggage, etc.
It is intended - following this opinion - they are the miles on the Trajan Column that wear the Segmentata because it is evident that they are mainly used for non-combat duties. While the "true" legionary is the one with the hamata.

I completely disagree of course with his conclusions, but it is very interesting the piece of Flavius Joseph, who could provide me with both english and latin verses?
Sander?

That's one of the most rediculous conclusions i've ever heard of.

I wonder what he'll say next...red headed legionarys wore Gallic G's?
Magnus/Matt
Well, the Latin version would be a translation as well. You'd need the Greek one. Any refs in Josephus (it's a bit long, you see)
Greets
Ave Luca,
CHAPTER 5. - A DESCRIPTION OF THE ROMAN ARMIES AND ROMAN CAMPS AND OF OTHER PARTICULARS FOR WHICH THE ROMANS ARE COMMENDED.

If the italian reenactors magazine is the same one I've read, the author also tells the segmentatae were exclusively made with leather (!), besides other nonsenses.
Not very serious to write, if not harmful, in my opinion...
Yep.. I stumbled upon that site not so long ago but I thought best not to mention it.
But, well, let's put it in perspective: some people think the pyramids were built by aliens, others believe Atlantis did lie at one time in the middle or the Atlantic Ocean, and so on..
I don't see anything about Josephus on that site.
