Auxilliary Archers Impressions
#1
Salve Fraters,

I was wondering how may of you have put together representations of Auxilliary Archers in your groups? I am looking for clear, clean images/vendors so I can start putting together a small squad of them.

Any help + Images from antiquity or current reproductions would be greatly appreciated.
Also, please ID the smith that created them if you would be so kind,

Thanks in advance,

There is an image of a Syrian archer auxilliary from housteads fort on hadrians wall, possibly in the images DB. Also go to the RMRS website, there should be a few pics of archers there as a starting point?

I had same problem, go to the Romanarmy.com homepage, then access the link from there. Jasper is still to do the link on here , I believe.

Which period, and from which part of the empire? There would be a huge variance in appearance for certain.

For early second Century (125 onwards) see here..

Peroni,
Sometime around 60-100 AD
Germania - Gaul

Would the Haminian impression work for that?

Doubtful. I personally would opt for the more Western equipment as Hama was not under Roman rule until 63AD.

If they went overland to Britain they didn't arrive there until about 120AD. It's a slim possibility, although there is no record of the Hamian unit being stationed in Germania or Gaul IIRC (There is evidence of a soldier from COH I Hamiorum at Trier in the form a Syrian diploma.(CIL 13, 03684 = AE 1996, 01098) for the period you suggest. We do have other archer cohorts in Germany though..

We have COH I Sagittariorum at Bingum (Bingerbrück) in Germania Superior. These 1st Century grave stele of these soldiers 'Hyperanor' http://www.romanarmy.com/cms/component/ ... Itemid,94/

and 'T. Iulius Abdes Pantera' ..

show the men in their finest Roman military kit with double belts and Roman military tunics in typical Rhineland fashion.

Peroni,

I can't say I'm not disappointed :?

So from those of the COH I Sagittariorum at Bingum... I can't make out very much from those engavings...
Would anyone have pictures and or line drawings?

Much appreciated

What more do you need? Paenula, shortened tunic with the typical Rhineland pleats, caligae and regular Roman military belts of the early to mid first Century.

Belt details from Mike Bishop's article on the 'Early Imperial 'apron'. (JRMES 3 1992)

I would say that any basic functional first Century Weisenau or Coolus type would be quite suitable.

Peroni,

Weisenau is another term for Imperial, yes?
If so, would our current infantry Gallic G's or H's suffice; Or would perhaps any of the following be more suited?
AH6308B-N Coolus ''G'', 1st C.AD (Drusenheim)
AH6051B-N Brass Coolus ''E'' (Walbrook)

Thanks for all your help.

Any of the Robinson Gallic types from A - J or Italic types B - D

Coolus C onwards

Mainz aux B type as well.

That is pretty good news!

So basically from the line drawings, these archers would look pretty much the same as the infantry, only without the body armour.
- Tunica (shortened with pleats)
- Gallic G or H Cassus
- Balteus
- Calligae
- Some sort of archer's leather forearm guard?
- Some sort of passable Recurved bow (recommendations in North America)

Now here is the 10,000 dollar question... what would the Commander of such a unit be wearing?

I wonder/question why armour would be excluded from the archers equipment. A lighter version of a hamata, without things like shoulder doubling, would be perfectly understandable. These guys didn't carry shields! At least a hamata would give some sort of protection should they be flanked (mayor worry for archers). If I were an archer back then, be sure I would wear a hamata, just as I do in my current impression of one ....
On footwear, are you sure about those calligae as exculsive footwear? They are a good option, for sure, but getting towards 100 ad, boots would be good as well, wouldn't they?
