Amphoras and the Ancient Wine Trade
#1
Salvete Omnes!

Shortly I am going to be posting a map for your enjoyment that I redid in Photoshop from the pamphlet "Amphoras and the Ancient Wine Trade" put out by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, 1979,ISBN 87661-619-8, Picture Book 6.

I got the idea from a customer who wanted to know what kind of amphora might have been used at the famous Biblical wedding at Cana. After doing some research, I came across this booklet, and To my surprise I realized that the wine, especially if it was a lavish wedding, would have been imported from Greece or Rome, and so the amphora would not have likely been made locally.

After tweaking the map so that it is more legible, I am going to see if I can match common amphora types to cities. I may even make the map interactive so that you can click on the city, and an amphora from that area pops up. I'll see how involved it gets-it may take a while-
In the meantime, if anyone has any further information on amphoras and the wine trade, feel free to enlighten me. Big Grin
