Hey guys!

Hey, I just turned 17, and I want to know if anyone knows where I could get a lorica Segementa suit that's pretty cheap. I noticed helmets for sale that have been over 200 dollars on average, but in rare places the same piece will be under 60, does this go for body armor to? thnx if you could help me!

You could check with Lawrence and Julie at LaWren's nest. I think they had some Corbridge A seggies in thier bargain basement for under $200. Not sure if they have any in stock or in your size. When it comes to helmets you have to be really careful. You can find "trooper' helmets for under $50 on one site and $150 on another. Either way it's still P-O-S and most groups won't allow it in their ranks. (sshhh don't tell anybody, but I actually wear a reworked one under my Cornicien's bear pelt) Sometimes the worse a piece is, the more some E-crook is willing to charge. Good luck and good hunting!

Max,

One of the best ways to acquire gear inexpensively is to make it yourself.

Also, most clubs have programs to assist new members to acquire gear often for the cost of materials.

Sean's interesting avatars. the broken pilum..

An elephant?

Heck no!

Damage from tossing it... one too many times, obviously.

The collet was loose. The wood has shrunk. No metal wedges. So, when it missed the straw bale target and struck the ground ... kablamo!

[Important Note: Kablamo is the official sound of pilum breaking at that particular spot. For a complete list of sounds for different kinds of breaks and/or damage contact me off line.]

We thought it was pretty damn cool.

It's been repaired.. the wood head cut down the tang slot extended.. took maybe 15 minutes.

The things are no good hanging on the wall!

Max - it could be slightly more affordable to make your own armor - check out leg xx's site: http://www.larp.com/legioxx

A helmet is difficult to make and expensive to have custom made. You'll need to check vendors like LaWren's Nest, Find-It-Armory and Soul of the Warrior (for US vendors anyway). Make sure you contact those vendors to make sure the particular helmet you're looking to get is In Stock before you order! And don't be afraid to look around for a helmet in stock.

I'd suggest you save up your money and buy a good helmet made, rather than trying to make your own. IMHO you don't *need* to have armor right away to play as a Roman...And at that, I'd also suggest you have a good tunic, helmet, Caligae boots, gladius, and a Balteus belt made before you dive into armor.

Just realize too, you will likely be paying $200+ for both a helmet and for armor (new), sellers [on ebay for instance] offering an armor for $60 should be very suspicious. But, also take notes on the Leg XX site, and if someone happens to be selling a used armor for 'cheap', you might just get lucky. Some of the "cheapo" armors are convertable, so if you do happen to get stuck with a cheap lemon, you could still salvage it if you don't mind putting work into it.

Also on Leg XX's site is a listing of area Legion groups - check that and see if you're near any of the California groups, like Leg VI (L.A.) and IX Hispana (San Diego and other areas) ~ both are great guys and willing to help!

good luck!
